ftentimes, clients will ask me, “What should I do?”

What they are looking for is a technique or a O repeatable technique. Well, in this section, I will give you plenty of those magical techniques, but first I want to go over one of the most powerful and most basic. I doubt it’s ever really been explained to you why the phrase, “Just be yourself”

is so powerful. What people mean when they say it is, “I know you, I like you, and if others take the time to get to know you, I’m sure they will feel the same way.”

Unfortunately, we all have a lot of layers to “ourselves”, and we oftentimes don’t truly understand what makes us so likeable to others. In fact, most of the feedback we get from other tends to be negative.

As a child, we often heard more from our parents when we misbehaved than when we were behaving appropriately. As adults, we seldom receive praise for performing as we ought to––yet, when we fail to meet expectations, it’s immediately brought to our attention! So you see, being told to just “be yourself” may be encouraging and ego-boosting, but if you have no idea of why “being yourself” is so great, it doesn’t do much good.

My first suggestion is that you think back and take an inventory of your past relationships, both romantic and other-60

wise. I like going over one’s past because it always leaves clues as to how you have already succeeded. What does this mean?

In your current relationship, or perhaps in the past, what did your partner openly admire? What did he or she praise you for?

Most people have had some degree of success in either a past relationship or a current one. Perhaps it is their kindness or that they are a good listener. Those are generalizations, and if you look back and take a moment to reflect, you will realize that there are several characteristics that people tend to continuously find attractive in you.

Right now, I invite you to put this book down and make a list of these characteristics. Which characteristics do friends and family consistently admire that they make mention of? Do you hear regularly that you are, indeed, a great listener or perhaps that you have an excellent sense of fashion? Maybe even that you are the kindest person your friends know. If others have complimented you on certain characteristics, it means that those characteristics have made a strong impression. If you have trouble remembering compliments, then you can create a Truth List. Every day that someone says something wonderful or nice about you, write it down word for word in quotation marks.

Then make a dash, write the person’s name and the date next to the quote. When I describe a compliment, I don’t mean a half-hearted attempt by a man to say something nice, simply to get something from you, such as, “Hey baby, you look great, can I borrow $40?” That isn’t a compliment––it’s a line––and every woman can tell the difference.
